JAN. 5

Detachment meeting: The Northeastern Detachment Marine Corps League monthly meeting is Sunday, Jan. 5, 2 p.m. at the Detachment 1340 Alder St., Scranton.

JAN. 6

Teen Chess Club: The Valley Community Library’s new Teen Chess Club will meet Monday, Jan. 6 at 5:30 p.m. at the library, 739 River St., Peckville. Bring a friend or make new ones. Ages 8-18. JAN. 8

Dog licenses: Wednesday, Jan 8 from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Mayfield Municipal Building, 739 Penn Ave., Mayfield. The 2020 Lackawanna County Dog Licenses will be available to purchase. Anyone unable to come at the scheduled date may apply prior to the date, pay for the tag with the exact amount and return later to obtain the license. The fees and requirements are regular fee male or female dog: $8.50; neutered male or spayed female: $6.50. For senior citizens, 65 years or older, male or female dog: $6.50; neutered male or spayed female: $4.50.

Dog licenses: Ed Karpovich, Lackawanna County Treasurer, will be selling dog licenses at the Throop Municipal Building, 436 Sanderson St., Throop on Thursday, Jan. 9, 2020 from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Discussion with James Kanavy: Saturday, Jan. 11, at the Carbondale Public Library, 5 North Main St., Carbondale. James Kanavy is a criminal justice lecturer at Marywood University. He has served as Special-Agent In Charge with the Pennsylvania Crime Commission and as Investigations Manager in the Pennsylvania Office of Inspector General. His discussion will include the history of organized crime in Northeast Pennsylvania, where it stands today and he will share his knowledge of the events depicted in the Netflix movie, “The Irishman.” Refreshments will be served. Registration is required. Seating is limited.

Mid Valley Class of 1970 reunion planning: Graduates of Mid Valley High School Class of 1970 will meet to plan its 50th anniversary class reunion on Wednesday, Jan. 14, at 6 p.m. at Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5544, 205 Dolph St. in Jessup. Valley Community Library Vets’ Group: the monthly Vets’ Group meets on every second Tuesday of the month at 5 p.m. at the Valley Community Library. Active duty, reserves, retired or just served one enlistment period or more. No matter whether you served during war time or peace time. Parents A 2nd Time Support Group: The “Parents A 2nd Time” (PAST) Group meets at the Valley Community Library on the fourth Monday of every month. Are you an older adult raising children of a family member? You’re not alone…attend a monthly support group to hear similar situations that others are experiencing. Learn about potential resources, community programs, services and agencies that can provide connections, guidance and peer support to older persons living with, caring for and parenting the children of loved ones. The Stone Soup Kitchen at Christ Church: There will be no community luncheons at Christ Episcopal Church in January, February or March 2020 due to winter weather issues.

Olyphant Hometown Hero Banners renewal info: Olyphant is erecting a one-of-a-kind memorial, The Freedom Fighter, honoring 21st century soldiers. It is slated to be dedicated in 2020. You can have your banner that was hung during Phase One in 2017 returned to you and/or buy a new one to be hung for $160; have your original banner rehung for a suggested donation of $25-$50 which would help with construction costs of The Freedom Fighter memorial, or you can have a brick/paver engraved to be placed at The Freedom Fighter Memorial site and also have your banner rehung for another three years for a $100 donation. Toddler Time: at the Dickson City Civic Center, recommended for those 18 months and older with caregiver. Toddler Time runs Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10:30 a.m. to noon. Cost is $6 for Dickson City residents, $8 for non-residents.

Senior Fitness: at the Dickson City Civic Center, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9-10 a.m. Free for Dickson City residents, $10 per calendar year for non-residents.
