Once again this year, the Carbondale Area Mock Trial team will compete in the Lackawanna County Bar Association’s annual mock trial competition.

The event will take place at both the county and federal courthouses in Scranton, in the coming weeks. Students will take on the roles of attorneys and witnesses and compete against other area schools.

This year’s case is a criminal case involving the opioid drug crisis. A doctor is on trial for prescribing a strong painkiller that interacted with another medication and led to the death of a patient. Carbondale students will compete both as the defense and as the prosecution during the next several weeks.

Members of this year’s team are:

Seniors: Anna Allen, Calista Calabro, Kristina Gorel, Madison Hayner (captain), Madison Moase (captain), Kianna Savage and Kaitlyn Shockey (captain). Juniors: Declan Caviston, Cora Heenan and Jarred Rosar. Freshmen: Alyssa Cosklo and Mia Perri. Teacher coach is Carm Perri.

Attorney advisors are Deb Rothenberg and John Martin

“The case itself has a lot of twists and turns which makes it both interesting and challenging,” said junior Jarred Rosar. “I play the attorney for the defense, making the argument in the doctor’s favor. We are a strong team with many returning members and should do well in the upcoming competitions. I’ve participated in mock trial for the past three years and it’s always been something I so look forward to. I look forward to it again next year.”
