Recently at Carbondale Area Jr./Sr. High School, an assembly was held on the topic of mental health and wellness. Students were educated on the subjects of anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder as well as many other emotional problems that many of their peers face.
This assembly’s objective was to promote awareness of suicide prevention and of various mental-health issues and to educate the school community about risks and warning signs.
The Lou Ruspi foundation was created and founded by Karla Farina and Teressa Stann in memory of their brother, Lou Ruspi Jr., who took his own life. The LRJ Foundation’s mission is to reduce the stigma attached to emotional illness and increase education on mental health in school districts.
These presentations have already made a great impact on several students from our area. By providing these presentations free of charge, The founders say they hope to help others suffering from depression and other emotional problems like those that plagued their younger brother. They want to do all that they can to reach out to those affected by these illnesses and urge them to “break the silence.” The presentation was led by licensed professional counselors.
